Left: Leo Poeten, 'Kommodore Major Müncheberg', GDK 1943, room 24. Bought by Gauleiter Florian for 4.000 RM. Portrait of Major Joachim Müncheberg, holder of the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern (Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords). He was victorious in 103 air battles. Müncheberg died in a plane crash in 1943. 
Right: Leo Poeten, 'Portrait of Colonel Josef Priller', holder of the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern (Knight’s Cross Oak Leaves and Swords). Josef Priller flew 1307 combat missions and had 101 victories, consisting of 11 USAAF heavy bombers, 68 Spitfires, 11 Hurricanes, 5 medium bombers and 5 USAAF fighters.
  


Left: Leo Poeten, 'Unser Kommandeur' ('Our Commander'). The painting was probably taken away by Allied Forces from the GDK-depot in 1945. Earlier in the possession of the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, DC., nowadays in the possession of the Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr, Dresden.

Leo Poeten, 'Luftwaffe Hauptmann Adolf Dickfeld'. GDK 1943, room 17. Painted in Crimea at May 19, 1942,  just when Dickfeld had been awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub (Knight’s Cross Oak Leaves). Adolf Dickfeld was officially credited with 136 victories claimed in 1072 combat missions. Painting is in the possession of the Düsseldorf Stadtmuseum.
 





Leo Poeten
German painter Leo Poeten (1889–1949), born in Köningswald, served in World War I and he was awarded with the ‘Frontkämpfer-Ehrenkreuz’ (a medal for wounded soldiers). Later he studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf under P. Behrens and A. Münzer. He created numerous portraits and landscape paintings. In 1932 he took part in the Düsseldorf-Munich Art Exhibition in the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf. In 1938 he created a portrait of Captain Erich Steinbrück which was acquired by the Marineministerium in Berlin. He was represented at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich in 1943 with the portrait of Generalmajor Galland, Oberleutnant Adolf Dickfeld and the portrait of Kommodore Major Müncheberg. The later was also published in an illustrated book on Düsseldorf-based artists in 1943. He painted Müncheberg during a trip to the English Channel in 1942.
